How to Adjust the Level of Incoming Spam Protection

For your security, spam protection is enabled by default for all HostM hosting accounts.

The level of incoming spam protection can be adjusted to suit your needs. A higher level of protection is more strict and sends more incoming messages to the Junk folder, while a lower level is more tolerant and allows more incoming messages into the Inbox.

The following step-by-step guide shows you how to adjust the level of incoming spam protection for your hosting account.:

  1. Sign in to your HostM hosting account’s cPanel.

Your cPanel access details are listed on the hosting account’s Info page in the Client Lounge.

  2. Under the Email heading, click Spam Filters.

  3. Under the Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam option, look for the phrase ‘exceeds the Spam Threshold Score (X)’, where X is a number. Within that phrase, click the text ‘Spam Threshold Score’ (even though it might not look like a link).

  4. From the drop-down menu, select Custom.

  5. Enter a lower number (negative numbers are permissible) to be more strict and send more messages to the Junk folder, or a higher number to be more tolerant and allow more messages through to the Inbox.

We like to use a value of around 3 which serves as a good balance in many cases, but not all. When adjusting the value, we recommend sticking within the range of 1 (very strict) to 8 (very tolerant).

  6. Click Update Scoring Options to save your settings.

Please keep in mind that over-adjusting the value in either direction may cause too many legitimate messages to go into the Junk folder, or too much spam to arrive at the Inbox.
